Research an organization through its own product documentation, published work, and current openings. A “top ten” ranking without a defined method is not evidence of fit.

Start with the question you need answered

Are you looking for a tool, a research collaborator, a service provider, or a job? The useful evidence differs for each.

For a tool, look for documentation and a sample you can test. For a service, ask for scope and a relevant deliverable. For a job, inspect the actual role and responsibilities rather than assuming every AI company needs the same skills.

Use primary sources for claims about the organization. Keep an unanswered question separate from a conclusion.

Evaluate a concrete example

Suppose a provider says it can automate document processing. Ask for a sample input, expected fields, validation rules, and the review step. Test missing information and a conflicting total.

A polished demo does not establish how the system behaves on your documents. The invoice exercise shows a small input and explicit checks you can use as a starting point.

Avoid unsupported rankings

Do not infer suitability from funding totals, company size, or a directory position. Compare the actual work, current information, and the questions your task needs answered.
